“Actor Hina Bayat has sparked a debate on social media after sharing a social experiment that examined how men respond to women based on their clothing. The experiment, which involved women dressed in d…”

The experiment, which involved women dressed in different styles, produced unsettling observations about harassment, confidence and how women are perceived in public spaces. In a viral clip shared on Instagram from a recent interview, Bayat explained how the experiment was conducted in a marketplace to observe men's reactions to women wearing different outfits.

She revealed that the team initially sent two girls into the market while filming them. One was dressed in jeans with a short kurta, while the other wore a traditional shalwar kameez. "When they were walking in the bazaar, they got stares from multiple guys but they didn't engage," Hina recalled.

After 30 minutes, the same girls returned to the market, but their appearances had been changed. One wrapped a dupatta around herself, while the other was also dressed more modestly. View this post on Instagram.

However, the response was different this time. "This time around, people started giving remarks with their staring. It grew from there.

It was very surprising to me," she said. The experiment took another turn when the girls were sent out for a third time. One wore a niqab, while the other wore a regular dupatta styled as a hijab., the men began behaving even more disrespectfully towards them.

"This time, the men started disrespecting them," she explained, adding that the team initially struggled to understand why the reactions had changed. After analysing their observations, Bayat said the team arrived at a troubling conclusion about the mentality of the men involved.

"We found out that when men found girls confident, they avoided them because they knew those were the type of girls to shout, make a scene, or slap them. But the second we made the girls more modest, the men saw them as weak and fragile," she said.

Bayat described the findings as a disturbing reflection of an attitude in which some men associate modest dressing with weakness rather than respecting women regardless of their appearance. The experiment also prompted mixed reactions from social media users.

While some agreed with the actor's observations and argued that the problem lay in men's attitudes, others maintained that confidence could not be determined by clothing and that women could carry themselves confidently regardless of what they wore. Bayat's social experiment has once again drawn attention to concerns surrounding women's safety in public spaces.

While opinions differ on the role of clothing, body language and confidence, harassment cannot be justified by a woman's appearance or choice of dress. Modest clothing does not indicate weakness, just as modern dressing does not automatically make someone confident.

No woman should have to change her appearance, dress a certain way or project a particular attitude to avoid harassment. The responsibility for such behaviour lies with those who engage in it, not the women who experience it.
