“Somewhere in the deep waters off Karachi, a giant of the ocean surfaced, took a breath and disappeared into the blue. The fleeting encounter, captured on camera, has turned into a significant discover…”

The fleeting encounter, captured on camera, has turned into a significant discovery for marine researchers: a rare sperm whale, measuring approximately 45 feet, has been recorded about 40 nautical miles southwest of Karachi, marking the first documented sighting of the species in Sindh's coastal waters.

The sighting, recorded by WWF-Pakistan, offers a glimpse into the remarkable marine life inhabiting Pakistan's waters, much of which remains unexplored. The encounter took place during a marine expedition by WWF-Pakistan board member Zahid Majeer, who managed to capture footage of the enormous mammal as it surfaced.

The video provides striking details of the animal, including its distinctive breathing hole, prominent skin markings and characteristic hump along its body. For marine scientists, however, the significance of the sighting extends well beyond the spectacle of encountering such a formidable creature.

Moazzam Khan, the sperm whale's presence in Pakistani waters is an important record, highlighting the extraordinary biodiversity of the country's marine ecosystem. While the species has previously been sighted off the Balochistan coast, its appearance in Sindh's waters is being documented for the first time.

Pakistan's marine waters are home to an impressive variety of cetaceans. As many as 26 species of whales and dolphins have been recorded in the country, including blue whales, Bryde's whales and Arabian Sea humpback whales.

Research and monitoring by WWF-Pakistan have also led to the first-ever records of several toothed whale species in Pakistani waters. The sperm whale is among the largest toothed animals on Earth. Unlike fish, it is a mammal that gives birth to live young and nurses them with milk, much like the blue whale and other marine mammals.

It can live for around 60 years, spending much of its life navigating the vast, often lightless depths of the ocean. Its most unmistakable feature is its enormous, block-shaped head, which accounts for a substantial portion of its body.

It also possesses the largest brain of any living animal - a remarkable biological distinction for a creature whose life revolves around the mysterious world beneath the waves. But its true prowess becomes apparent when it dives.

Sperm whales typically descend to depths of 300 to 800 metres in search of food, although they can venture as deep as one to two kilometres. Their diet consists largely of giant squid, other squid species, octopuses and deep-sea fish.

Hunting in the darkness, where sunlight cannot penetrate, requires a sophisticated natural navigation system. The sperm whale relies on echolocation, emitting powerful sound waves that bounce off objects and prey, allowing it to detect and locate food in the deep sea.

Even its breathing mechanism sets it apart. Unlike most whales, the sperm whale has a single blowhole positioned towards the left side of its head.
