Naval chief calls for action to unlock Pakistan’s maritime potential on World Maritime Day

In a message issued on the occasion of World Maritime Day 2026, being observed on September 24, the naval chief extended his felicitations to Pakistan’s maritime community and the international maritime fraternity. CNS Ashraf acknowledged the contributions of seafarers, maritime professionals, fishermen and coastal communities, saying their efforts remained vital to maritime connectivity, economic prosperity and the country’s overall economy.
He said Pakistan’s coastline and Exclusive Economic Zone offered significant opportunities for growth in shipping, shipbuilding, ship recycling, fisheries, offshore resources, energy, tourism and other activities linked to the blue economy. “Realising this potential requires not only a safe, secure and sustainable maritime environment but also effective institutional oversight, responsible practices and continued investment in developing maritime capacity,” he said.

The chief of naval staff highlighted this year’s World Maritime Day theme, “From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence”, saying for Pakistan, this meant continued efforts to strengthen maritime safety, protect the marine environment, enhance professional capacity and ensure that the maritime sector operates in accordance with international standards.
He also emphasised cooperation, knowledge sharing and capacity building among maritime stakeholders. “Pakistan Navy remains committed to safeguarding Pakistan's maritime interests and contributing to a secure and stable maritime environment,” CNS Ashraf said in a statement.
“Through continuous surveillance of our maritime areas, protection of sea lines of communication and contribution to regional maritime security, Pakistan Navy plays a vibrant role in creating an environment conducive to the growth of maritime trade and other economy-related activities,” he added.
The naval chief stressed that sustainable development of Pakistan’s maritime sector required a national approach, with greater awareness, protection of the ecosystem, responsible use of resources and stronger linkages among government institutions, industry, academia and coastal communities.

Reaffirming the Navy’s commitment to the International Maritime Organisation’s vision of safer, secure and environmentally sustainable seas, CNS Ashraf said Pakistan would continue to promote excellence across the maritime sector. “Guided by our national maritime objectives, we shall continue to safeguard Pakistan’s maritime interests and contribute towards a secure, prosperous and sustainable future,” he said.
The naval chief expressed hope that World Maritime Day 2026 would inspire stakeholders to translate maritime aspirations into practical action and harness the opportunities offered by the seas for the prosperity of the country and its people.
