KP governor says Police Act 2026 unconstitutional, will not approve it

Speaking to the media, Kundi said he would not approve the legislation in its current form and would exercise his constitutional authority to object to it. He added that neither the governor nor the chief minister could take any action that was contrary to the Constitution.
The governor alleged PTI provincial government was under pressure and seeking greater control over the inspector general of police and the provincial police force. Referring to PTI's previous position that the police should remain apolitical, Kundi alleged that the proposed legislation would instead increase political control over the police.

The provincial cabinet has approved the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police Act 2026 with amendments concerning police appointments, transfers, oversight and administrative powers.

The changes were approved during the cabinet’s 59th meeting chaired by Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi. KP Information Minister Shafi Jan said a subcommittee’s report on the proposed police legislation was presented to the cabinet.
The report was prepared in consultation with KP police authorities and subsequently approved with additional recommendations.
