“Pakistan's universities have once again been left knocking at the door of the global academic elite, with none managing to break into the world's top 400 in the latest Times Higher Education (THE) ran…”

The country's best-performing institution sits somewhere in the 551-600 bracket, while two of its largest public universities - the University of Karachi and the University of the Punjab - languish in the 1,601-1,800 and 1,801-2,000 bands, respectively.

The rankings paint a sobering picture of Pakistan's academic standing: 56 universities secured a place on the global list, but none came close to the top 400. The gap raises uncomfortable questions about research output, academic productivity and the ability of Pakistani universities to compete on the world stage.

THE has released its World University Rankings 2027, with the University of Oxford retaining the top position for an 11th consecutive year. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) ranked second, while Princeton University and Stanford University shared third place.
