“Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Sonny Baker and Josh Tongue will feature in the three-match ODI series before leaving the tour to prepare for December’s Test series in South Africa. Archer and Jacob Bethel…”

Archer and Jacob Bethell, who is returning from a knee injury, have been included in the ODI squad as England step up their preparations for the World Cup, which will be hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.

The T20I squad, meanwhile, includes four uncapped players, with Somerset wicketkeeper-batter Thomas Rew, 18, and Hampshire seamer Eddie Jack receiving their maiden England call-ups. James Coles and Henry Crocombe could also make their T20I debuts, while Luke Wood returns despite recently losing his central contract.

“We will be at close to full strength as we ramp up preparations for a World Cup in a year’s time,” national selector Marcus North said, referring to the ODI squad. He added that the four fast bowlers would leave after the ODI series to manage their workloads ahead of the South Africa Tests.

England will play a three-day warm-up against a Cricket South Africa Invitational XI in Durban from December 9-11 before opening their three-Test series in Johannesburg on December 17. The early arrival of their quicks will give them time to acclimatise and work with new Test bowling coach Eric Simons.

Rehan Ahmed has been left out of both squads after a disappointing home summer, while seamer Saqib Mahmood will undergo knee surgery following another injury setback. Brydon Carse has also been omitted as a Cricket Regulator investigation into his conduct during a night out in Derby continues.

England managing director Rob Key said Carse needed to “get his house in order” before the team decided whether he could return to international cricket. England will travel to Australia after an ODI tri-series in Pakistan involving the hosts and Sri Lanka.
