The pop star filed the lawsuit in May, accusing Samsung of using her image on TV boxes to help market its products without her permission. Samsung has since argued that Lipa does not have a trademark covering her likeness and therefore cannot bring the claim.
The technology giant is also arguing that English law does not recognise a general “right of publicity”, which would allow someone to prevent the commercial use of their identity. Samsung has therefore asked the court to throw out Lipa’s case.
The dispute centres on a photograph of Lipa that appeared on the exterior of Samsung television packaging. Samsung previously said the image came from a content partner who had given the company assurances that the necessary rights had been cleared.

Lipa’s legal team has responded to Samsung’s latest filing, although details of their response have not been publicly disclosed. The lawsuit is seeking $15 million in damages, with Lipa alleging that Samsung used her image commercially without authorisation.
The latest filing does not resolve the dispute, meaning the case will continue unless the judge grants Samsung’s request for dismissal. For now, the legal battle leaves the question of whether Samsung can be held liable for the use of Lipa’s image before the court.
