Army Secretary Dan Driscoll has submitted his resignation to President Donald Trump, the matter, marking a major change at the Department of the Army amid reported tensions with Defense Secretary Pete…

One source said Driscoll’s departure was not unexpected, citing months of friction between the two officials. Another source familiar with the resignation said Driscoll raised concerns about the administration’s approach to Army transformation and military readiness.

The source said Driscoll specifically objected to Hegseth’s decision to remove senior generals involved in those efforts. An Army official confirmed that Driscoll spoke with Trump about the current condition of the Army before submitting his resignation.

The departure of Driscoll, an Army veteran and longtime friend of Vice President JD Vance, had been rumored for some time. His resignation comes roughly six months into the ongoing conflict with Iran, which has yet to show signs of ending.

It remains unclear when Driscoll will officially leave his position. Under normal circumstances, the under secretary of the Army would serve as acting secretary. The current under secretary is Mike Obadal, a retired Army colonel and former special operations aviator.

White House spokesperson Anna Kelly praised Driscoll’s tenure, saying he had played an important role in advancing Trump’s agenda at the Department of the Army.

“Secretary Driscoll has been highly effective in advancing President Trump’s agenda to Make America Strong Again at the Department of the Army,” Kelly said, highlighting his leadership during major military operations, his focus on readiness and lethality, and his involvement in negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. The Wall Street Journal was the first to report Driscoll’s departure.

Earlier this year, Hegseth dismissed Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George along with two other generals. Driscoll had worked closely with George, whose removal drew criticism and questions from lawmakers in both parties.

During a congressional appearance in April, Driscoll publicly expressed his respect for George, praising his decades of military service and describing him as an “amazing, transformational leader.”“I adore them,” Driscoll said at the time, referring to George and his family. “And he was an amazing, transformational leader.”The resignation adds to questions surrounding Hegseth’s leadership of the Pentagon.

Multiple sources previously developed distrust toward officials around him, including both civilian and military personnel, and had become increasingly concerned about their loyalty.
