Sanders sharply criticized Trump’s remarks at the United Nations General Assembly, where the US president warned that Iran could face “annihilation” if a peace agreement is not reached. Sanders said Iranian civilians should not be subjected to such threats and described the prospect of annihilating Iran as a war crime.
“That is barbarism. And it is something the United States must never be associated with,” Sanders said in response to Trump’s remarks,. Sanders said the US should not be involved in actions that he described as violations of international law.

In remarks delivered ahead of the UN General Assembly on September 21, Sanders similarly described the war as illegal, unconstitutional and contrary to international law.

He argued that Congress, rather than the president acting unilaterally, has the constitutional authority over war. Sanders has repeatedly opposed US military action against Iran without congressional authorization, including after the US and Israel launched strikes against Iran earlier this year.
