Addressing the opening session of the United Nations General Assembly, Guterres said the world was becoming divided into two camps and urged countries to prevent further polarization. He said wars that began over the past decade had produced devastating consequences, while conflicts continued with growing indifference.

Guterres called on all parties to respect international law, stressing that no problem could be resolved through the use of force. Expressing concern over the situation in the Middle East, the UN chief said tensions remained high in the region and violations of ceasefire arrangements were continuing.
