“Javier Bardem has revealed that he wanted his. Skyfallvillain, Raoul Silva, to have a sexual interest in James Bond, explaining that he pitched the idea to director Sam Mendes while developing the chara…”

The Oscar-winning actor discussed the decision during a Screen Talk at the BFI London Film Festival on Sunday, 11 October, reflecting on how he helped introduce a homoerotic undertone to one of the most memorable encounters in the James Bond franchise.

Bardem played Silva, a former MI6 agent turned cyberterrorist who seeks revenge against the intelligence agency and its leader, M, played by Judi Dench. His character's confrontation with Daniel Craig's Bond became one of the film's most talked-about scenes because of its suggestive dialogue and physical intimacy.

Recalling his conversations with Mendes, Bardem explained that he wanted to give Silva a more personal motivation beyond his plans to destroy MI6. “We went through the reading of it and [Mendes] was so open to what I was proposing to do with the sexuality of the character,” Bardem said,.

“Because I said, ‘Listen, all the villains have done everything to destroy the world, but what about something personal? What about something like, besides destroying the world, he wants to have sex with Bond?’”The actor said Mendes agreed to discuss the suggestion with the studio before deciding whether to include it in the film.

The resulting scene sees Silva approach Bond, who is tied to a chair, and touch his chest and thighs while speaking suggestively. Bond responds to Silva's advances with the line, “Well, there's a first time for everything,” before adding, “What makes you think this is my first time?”

The exchange leaves the nature of Bond's sexual history ambiguous while unsettling Silva's attempts to gain control of the encounter. Bardem credited Mendes with allowing him to explore the character's sexuality and push the scene further than audiences might have expected from a traditional James Bond film.

The actor also suggested that the moment has endured in viewers' memories because it placed the famously confident spy in an unfamiliar situation. The decision was notable within a franchise traditionally associated with Bond's relationships with women.

Rather than explicitly defining either character's sexuality, the scene relied on ambiguity, provocation and psychological tension. Bardem also recalled initially feeling nervous about accepting the role. He admitted that he was overwhelmed on his first day on set when he realised he was appearing alongside Craig and Dench in a James Bond film, temporarily forgetting his lines.

Released in 2012, Skyfallwas directed by Mendes and became one of the most commercially successful entries in the long-running spy franchise. Bardem's performance as Silva earned widespread acclaim, with the character frequently remembered for his unsettling presence and unpredictable behaviour.

The actor's latest comments offer further insight into how the villain was developed and how a creative suggestion helped shape one of the film's defining confrontations.
