Dolly Parton posthumously accepts Americana lifetime achievement award in emotional video

The newly released footage came as a surprise to those attending the ceremony. Parton appeared on screen looking lively as she thanked the Americana Music Association and reflected on her connection to roots music, which she first encountered growing up in the Smoky Mountains.

Parton also discussed her 1997 album. Hungry Again, explaining that the project helped lead her towards a series of bluegrass and acoustic recordings that influenced the later direction of her career. She described that period as a musical renaissance and said she was grateful for the recognition.

Her recorded message ended with a heartfelt expression of affection for her fans. The footage was followed by a tribute performance from Brandi Carlile and I’m With Her, featuring Sarah Jarosz, Aoife O’Donovan and Sara Watkins.

The musicians performed Parton’s autobiographical song "Coat of Many Colors". Emmylou Harris introduced the tribute and reflected on Parton’s influence as a songwriter, performer and philanthropist. Harris highlighted Parton’s journey from her Appalachian roots to international stardom, as well as her work supporting literacy, disaster relief and medical research.

Parton died at age 80 in August 2026, weeks before the ceremony. Her death transformed what had been planned as a virtual acceptance into a posthumous appearance, giving attendees an unexpected opportunity to hear from her again.

The Americana Music Association had described the honour as recognition of Parton’s songwriting and recording career, particularly her lasting contribution to American roots music. Her recorded appearance ultimately became one of the ceremony’s most poignant moments.
