Bob Veldhof targets Pakistan hockey revival

Bob's name had initially been included in the squad's list for the Games. After several weeks of intensive training in Islamabad, Bob handled the Green-shirts at the FIH World Cup in Amstelveen where Pakistan finished 11th.

Bob, who also has business commitments in Europe, said his schedule made it difficult for him to remain with the team for extended periods. “I was not asked to go to Japan first and in my schedule it was difficult and they have now made another choice,” Bob said.

“It was impossible for me to go with the team to Korea. Japan was possible but without schedule I cannot manage things upfront,” he added. “I will come back but we still have to discuss,” Bob was quick to add.

Despite his absence from the Asian Games, Bob said he remained committed to Pakistan hockey and praised the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) for what he described as positive recent steps towards developing the sport. “PHF is on the track I believe,” Bob said.

“The changes done in two months are bigger than I saw before and that's a good step,” he added. Bob also expressed confidence that Pakistan could qualify for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, although he acknowledged that rebuilding the team would take time.

“I think that can happen,” Bob said. “But I have good relations with the PHF chief Mohyuddin Ahmad Wani and all want us to win the World Cup.”The Dutch coach said Pakistan needed patience as it worked to rebuild its squad and broaden its options.

“Nothing can happen overnight and time will tell how we get more selection options and how we strengthen the team. I am hopeful that hockey in Pakistan can grow and regain its top status in the world in the next few years,” Bob said.

Bob also clarified the length of his agreement with the PHF, saying he had signed a one-year contract that could be extended. “I have an agreement for one year which can be extended. PHF wanted two years but I wanted one year and so it happened,” Bob said, dispelling an impression that he had been hired only for four months.

The coach's immediate absence from the Asian Games is therefore not being presented as an end to his association with Pakistan hockey. Instead, Bob said he expected to return, although the schedule and terms of his future involvement still need to be discussed.

For a Pakistan team seeking to rebuild its international standing, Bob's stated objective is longer term; developing greater depth, expanding selection options and creating a side capable of competing at the highest level again within the next few years.
