LHC suspends PMDC notification increasing medical college fees

LLAHORE —The Lahore High Court has suspended the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council’s (PMDC) notification increasing fees for medical colleges. Justice Khalid Ishaq heard a petition filed by Central Park Medical College challenging the PMDC notification.
Advocate Ramzan Dhudhi represented the petitioner college during the hearing. The counsel college had collected Rs2.1 million in fees from students at the time of admission, while PMDC had issued a notification allowing an annual five per cent increase in fees.
He further said PMDC had also issued a notification regarding the collection of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) from students., PMDC does not have the authority to issue a notification for increasing fees. The counsel argued that Parliament could amend the relevant medical and dental council laws and order an increase in fees.

He therefore requested the court to declare the PMDC notification increasing fees for medical students null and void. After hearing the arguments, the Lahore High Court suspended the PMDC notification.
