Practical Magic 2 eyes Box Office victory as Spider-Man: Brand New Day nears domestic record

Warner Bros. reportedly produced the film for $75 million, meaning its theatrical performance will be closely watched as the studio looks to turn around a difficult year at the domestic box office. Meanwhile, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is entering its seventh weekend in cinemas after an extraordinary run.

The Tom Holland and Zendaya-led Marvel film has already earned approximately $923 million domestically and $2.4 billion worldwide, placing it among the biggest global releases of 2026. The film is also on the verge of making domestic box-office history.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day needs less than $10 million to overtake Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which currently holds the record for the highest domestic box-office gross with $936.7 million. Current projections indicate that Brand New Day could pass the milestone during the weekend.

The superhero sequel's performance has been a major factor in what has become a record-breaking summer for US cinemas. Domestic box-office revenue between May 1 and September 7 reached approximately $4.765 billion, surpassing the previous summer record set in 2013.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has been one of the biggest contributors to that total, alongside Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey. Practical Magic 2, meanwhile, arrives 28 years after the original film.

The sequel reunites Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as sisters Sally and Gillian Owens, bringing the pair back to the supernatural world that made the 1998 film a cult favourite despite its relatively modest theatrical performance.

The original Practical Magic was based on Alice Hoffman's novel and followed the Owens sisters, descendants of a long line of witches who are haunted by a family curse. The new film moves the story forward by more than two decades, with the next generation becoming caught up in the family's supernatural history.

Bullock and Kidman return alongside Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing, while Joey King and Maisie Williams join the cast. Susanne Bier directs the sequel, which follows the younger generation as they uncover family secrets and attempt to break the curse that has followed the Owens family for generations.

The box-office battle also comes at an interesting point for Warner Bros. The studio had a strong 2025, but its 2026 domestic performance has been considerably weaker, with no film having crossed $100 million domestically before Practical Magic 2's release.

The studio will therefore be hoping the nostalgic appeal of Bullock and Kidman's return can translate into a major theatrical hit. There is also a significant audience difference between the two films.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has benefited from the enormous global popularity of the Marvel franchise and the return of Holland as Peter Parker, while Practical Magic 2 is targeting audiences who have maintained an attachment to the original film for nearly three decades.

Early box-office forecasts suggest that nostalgia could be enough to give Practical Magic 2 the edge this weekend. Variety reported that the film is expected to open strongly enough to claim the No. 1 position, although its longer-term performance could depend on whether audiences continue turning out after opening weekend.

The sequel has already made a promising start at the domestic box office, earning $4.7 million from Thursday previews,. Spider-Man: Brand New Day, meanwhile, added $800,000 on Thursday and reached $926.77 million domestically. Regardless of which film takes the weekend crown, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has already secured its place as one of 2026's biggest box-office stories.

The question now is whether Practical Magic 2 can become the film that finally breaks its lengthy run at No. 1 while Spider-Man simultaneously makes history by becoming the highest-grossing domestic release of all time.
