The filmmaker previously earned international acclaim for Godzilla Minus One, which became the first Godzilla film to win the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. The sequel will also expand the story beyond the immediate aftermath explored in its predecessor.

Godzilla Minus Zero is set in 1949, with Japan attempting to rebuild after the Second World War and the events of the first film. The film is scheduled to have its world premiere at the New York Film Festival on September 26 before arriving in cinemas.

It will be released in Japan on November 3, 2026, followed by a North American theatrical release on November 6. Godzilla Minus Zero follows the international success of Godzilla Minus One, which became a major box-office and awards success for Toho.

The new film marks Yamazaki's return to the franchise as he continues the story with the same central characters. With its new trailer and expanded cast now revealed, Godzilla Minus Zero is shaping up to be one of the year's biggest Japanese theatrical releases.
