Major Aziz Bhatti's 61st martyrdom anniversary being observed today

He joined the Pakistan Military Academy on January 21, 1948. During the passing-out parade of the Academy’s first regular course in 1950, he was honoured by Shaheed-e-Millat Liaquat Ali Khan with the title of Best Cadet, as well as the Sword of Honour and Norman Gold Medal for his outstanding performance.

He travelled to Canada in 1952 for advanced military training and served as a General Staff Officer (Grade II - Operations) in Jhelum and Kohat from 1957 to 1959. He was associated with the Punjab Regiment from 1960 to 1962 and the Infantry School, Quetta, from 1962 to 1964.

During the 1965 War, Major Aziz Bhatti Shaheed defended the Burki sector near Lahore with extraordinary valour, holding his ground against relentless enemy assaults for five days and nights. Although deployed as a Company Commander along the BRB Canal, he personally undertook responsibility for an Observation Post.

Enduring hunger and thirst for days, he continued to offer fierce resistance to the enemy. His strikes destroyed two Indian tanks, while the enemy suffered heavy casualties and losses of military equipment and was unable to advance.

At dawn on September 12, Aziz Bhatti observed thousands of enemy soldiers hiding behind trees north of Barki and slowly advancing towards the canal. He opened fire on them. Later, when he climbed onto the canal bank to assess enemy movements, the area came under enemy shelling.

Standing firm at his post, he continued to engage the enemy until a shell pierced his chest, claiming his life in defence of the country. In recognition of his supreme sacrifice, Major Aziz Bhatti was awarded the Nishan-e-Haider on March 23, 1966.

The Pakistan Armed Forces have paid rich tribute to Major Raja Aziz Bhatti Shaheed for his exceptional courage, leadership and supreme sacrifice.

Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Chief of the Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces, Admiral Naveed Ashraf, Chief of the Naval Staff, Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu, Chief of the Air Staff, and General Syed Aamer Raza, Commander National Strategic Command, solemnly commemorated his 61st martyrdom anniversary on behalf of the Armed Forces of Pakistan.

They said Major Aziz Bhatti Shaheed’s selfless devotion to duty, unwavering courage and supreme sacrifice remained an enduring inspiration for generations. The Armed Forces reaffirmed their resolve to defend Pakistan’s sovereignty and security with the same courage, determination and spirit of sacrifice that he embodied.

President Asif Ali Zardari also paid rich tribute to Major Raja Aziz Bhatti Shaheed on his 61st martyrdom anniversary, saying the valiant soldier had immortalised his name in history by laying down his life while defending the motherland during the 1965 War.

In his message, the President said Major Aziz Bhatti Shaheed’s great sacrifice was a shining example of unwavering commitment to the sanctity of the homeland and national defence. He said the martyr’s matchless sacrifice and unparalleled valour were a source of pride for the entire nation and a beacon of guidance for the younger generation.

President Zardari said Pakistan would always remember the sacrifices of its martyrs, who formed the strong foundation of the country’s freedom, sovereignty and national security. He added that the nation would continue to cherish the sacrifices of its brave martyrs and salute their unmatched spirit of patriotism and devotion to the country.

On the occasion, floral wreaths will be laid at the martyr’s final resting place and prayers (Fateha) will be offered.
